GOLAU’R EPYNT (LIGHT OF THE EPYNT)

7th February 2010

Breconshire YFC members are undertaking a very exciting project.  A play was commissioned by Breconshire YFC and written by Euros Lewis and Betty Davies portraying the events exactly 70 years ago when the Epynt was requisitioned as a Military Training Area.

In the Autumn of 1939, the immediate impact of the war seemed a long way away from farming families on the Epynt.  However this was about to change quite dramatically and the events are vividly brought to life when a grandmother's diary is discovered by the grand-daughter.  In the normal way of children, why, where and how, are the questions asked.  The script has been researched extensively with memories from some of the people that were moved, being brought to life.  A number of descendents of those Epynt families are playing roles, and in many cases, they are the same age as when their grandparents / relatives were moved.

A great deal of help has been given by many, but a special thanks must go to our producer Mrs Eifiona Roberts whose family also were moved from the Epynt,  Mrs Lynne Griffin, Musical Director, and many other parents and stalwarts of the County YFC.   The play is the first part of a wider project to keep memories alive and record what happened with its impact on the culture, language and heritage of the area.

It's an exciting undertaking and it's the first time that Brecknock YFC has competed in the Welsh speaking dramas which will be held in Aberdyfi on 27th February.  Many young people have benefited from Welsh medium education but the opportunities to perform and compete through the medium of Welsh have been limited.  The members have had a lot of ‘hwyl' practicing, so come along and reminisce, laugh and cry.   A special performance will be staged on Monday 22nd February 2010 at Sennybridge School, 7.00pm start.  Tickets available on the door.
