YFC members from all over Wales travelled to the Royal Welsh Winter Fair held to compete in a variety of competitions which were held over the two days
Counties competed against each other to take the honours in the Wales YFC / FUW beef and lamb stock judging competitions, where the Montgomery Federation was the overall winners of both competitions followed closely by the Pembrokeshire Federation.
Members also took part in other competitions which included the Randal Parker Foods carcass judging, Eiddwen Garage ATV challenge, lamb trimming and a decorate a Christmas tree in conjunction with the Forestry Committee of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society.
Kay Morgan, Chairman of the organisations Activities and International Committee stated,
“All members benefited from the varied competitions held over the two days with a high standard achieved by all. We thank all the judges, stewards and sponsors for their continued support of Wales YFC events, without their support it would be very difficult to hold such a varied programme of competitions for our members.”
Here are the results from the 2010 Winter Fair in all Wales YFC events:
OVERALL FUW / Wales YFC BEEF AND LAMB STOCK JUDGING
1st Montgomery, 29 pts.
2nd Pembrokeshire, 28pts.
3rd Gwent, 23pts.
2010 FUW / Wales YFC Butchers’ Beef Stock Judging
The winning team in this year’s Butchers’ Beef Stock Judging competition came from Montgomery, and comprised of Gareth Lewis, Ben Powell, Whitney Jerman and Tudor Lewis. In second place were the Pembrokeshire team: Claire Johns, Sarah Atherton, Tomos Rees and Dyfed Davies. The Carmarthenshire team comprising of Arwel Jones, Rhydian Thomas, Eirwyn Richards and Jordan Davies were placed third.

2nd – Samuel Powell, Brecknock
3rd – Tudor Lewis, Montgomery
Under 18
1st – James Nixon, Radnor
2nd – Eirwyn Richards, Carmarthenshire

2nd – Delyth M Jones, Ceredigion

2nd – Owain Watkins, Brecknock
3rd – Sam Thornley, Hereford (border counties are eligible to compete in some of Wales YFC competitions at the Winter Fair)
For the forth year year running trophies were awarded to the highest individuals that gave their reasons in through the medium of Welsh and this year they were awarded to those competing in the Butchers beef competitions. The members were as follows;
16 and Under – Catrin Davies, Meirionnydd
18 and Under – Gethin Jones, Meirionnydd
21 and Under – Alaw Jones, Ynys Môn
26 and Under – Meinir Jones, Carmarthen
This is one of many projects that the Welsh Language Board are supporting through our Development and Welsh Promotion Officer.

Gwent’s team of James Stephens, Chris Waters, Will Probert and Lizzie Williams took home the team award, while Montgomery members Hedd Evans, Iwan Vaughan, Naomi George and Huw Worthington and Phillip Morgan, Gareth Jones, Gemma Robinson and Marged Rees from Pembrokeshire were placed equal second.

Ceredigion took home the team trophy, thanks to Eleri Jones, Delyth Jones, Dyfrig Williams and Llyr James. In second place was Gwent’s team, comprising of Rhys Wittingham, Rhys Cooke, Aled Groucott, and Lizzie Williams. Clwyd’s team came third, represented by Ceri Llywela Jones, Dewi Parry, Morgan Spencer, Elin Lambie.

2010 Wales YFC ATV Challenge sponsored by supported by Lynn Davies of Eiddwen Garage, Trefenter near Aberystwyth and Kawasaki
The ATV Challenge was again a highly popular event and thanks to the sponsors cash prises available to the winners. The first prise of ₤50 was awarded to Ben Harries of Radnor second prise of ₤30 went to Edward Powell from Radnor and Dyfan Ellis Jones of Ceredigion was placed third and took home ₤20.
Wales YFC Decorate a Christmas Tree Competition 2010 in conjunction with the RWAS Forestry Committee
First place was awarded to Emily Griffiths and Jack Griffiths of Pembrokeshire, with Jodie Price and Georgia Lewis of Radnor in second placed and Mary Jayne Granville and Elizabeth Granville from Glamorgan and Amy Baker and Gemma Baker from Gwent were equal third.
Lamb Trimming Competition lambs provided by Mr Davies, Cnychfawr Farm, Pant y Dwr
In this competition competitors were required to prepare a lamb for a fat stock show. Gareth Jones representing Pembrokeshire was placed first with Sian Downes representing Ceredigion placed second and Eirwyn Richards from Carmarthenshire was in third place.
